GPS Signal booster

In some modern vehicles certain metalisation processes are used on the glass.

This has the effect of shielding the inside of the vehicle from GPS signals. This can be very frustrating.

In most cases the advice is to try and connect an external GPS receiver to the device inside the vehicle, this however is not always possible as some devices have a cumbersome socket or no socket at all.

It is also ver time consuming having to constantly connect and disconnect the external antenna when removing the GPS device from the vehicle.

An active GPS signal booster fixes this problem by taking the GPS signal from an external antenna and then amplifies it and re-radiates it in the car close to where the GPS device is going to be used.

Diplomat Navigator is designed to work with Vista BUT …..

This does not mean that our technical staff can support the Vista operating system.

We have chosen to steer away from supporting this version of the Microsoft operating system as windows XP Pro is 100% adequate for our product and Vista installations seem to have a lot of additional support issues.

Windows XP Pro installations we can always help you with

If you chose to use Windows Vista then please make sure you are an expert user or you have access to a Vista technician.

Here is a copy of a technicians article regarding vista and some of the frustrations even windows XP experts face when trying to unscramble the new layout and security methodologies. The only edits I have made are to the Expletives.

———————————————————————

Many of the underlying technologies of Vista are very good though, albeit all of them are several years overdue - SuperFetch, the disk I/O priority improvements, search, Aero, shadowcopy etc were all a long time coming from MS.

There are a great many dichotomies though, such as the introduction of WPF which isn’t used even by MS, ReadyBoost which manages to reduce performance on systems with 2GB or more of RAM by pointlessly hammering USB controllers, the I/O prioritisation reduces performance on SSDs (no worries with XP) etc

Everything points to a lack of forethought and any cohesion of the overall design. The GUI is the most telling aspect of this, proving needlessly difficult to navigate at times. Case in point - I installed Vista SP1 on a friend’s machine two days ago. He asked me if I could reduce the size of the desktop icons to the smaller versions you have on XP. On XP if you right click the desktop and click ‘properties’ you get access to a tabbed menu that lets you control everything to do with the desktop. On Vista you just get a link to ‘personalise’, which is a series of spread out links each of which pops up an individual one of these tabs - the menu that pops up is even displayed as a tab. so why not have a single menu with all the tabs selectable from that popup menu? It seems like a complete regression.

In the end I figured out that that options isn’t anywhere near the ‘personalisation’ folder (despite it containing everything else to do with the desktop and themes). I even tried the accessibility options thinking the icon size controls would be there, but noo, only a single control for OMGXBOXHUGE icons. To get the full icon size menu you actually need to go into ‘view’. WHY THE F**K? Who the f**ging a*se is in charge of designing this sh*t? The simplest of options scattered all over the f**ing place for no good reason. (Yes I realise you can use Ctrl+scroll but that doesn’t let you define pixel size and leads to weird scaling issues)

You get the odd people to whom an OS is a religion whining on that things like the above are just down to not knowing the UI - but that completely misses the point. I shouldn’t have to learn the UI. Eveything should be easy to find, not buried away under several totally superfluous menus. When the older OS was easier to navigate than the new one then you have a problem. Banging on that I just don’t know my way round Vista is the stupidest argument you could make. I’ve spent months using it and am more than familiar with it, yet when someone asked me to do something simple which I hadn’t done before I was prettymuch incapable of achieving for the sake of having a single tabbed menu in favour of options scattered over 3 separate locations and then further subdivided under endless menu bloat. Its utterly idiotic.

Chuck Leopard on a system and I have yet to see anyone have any issue like the above (which are a constant day to day battle on Vista) even from technophobes or those who have never used it before. The consistency and simplicity of the design just make everything so much easier to work with. Even the simple animation of dock icons when you click on a menu option helps you figure out what each icon means when you’re still new to the OS. (although there are a couple of issues, like sometimes ‘close’ will close an application (itunes) or just an open document (everything else) which can be a little frustrating until you learn individual application behaviour)

Another lack of thinking things through is UAC. Everyone knows and hates this, but here’s something you might not have considered about it - ever tried to install Oblivion mods with UAC enabled? Well you can’t. You can’t copy any files into the Oblivion folder without being asked for EACH FILE FFS, and can’t load any mods because the mod managers which handle all the config options and loading of modules get denied access by UAC (which prevents anything writing to Program Files you see). Ditto mods for most games, although anything that used mod managers or similar is especially painful.

Another case in point to do with this install a couple of days ago - MS likes to tell us that Vista was shit a year ago because companies hadn’t released many drivers. Those nasty companies! Now theres loads of drivers around Vista is much better, and none of the problems were anything to do with MS! My friend has 3 printers - an old Canon IP1500, an old Epson C66 and a newer but still pre-Vista Epson R360. He also has an Epson VF100 scanner. So, want to guess how many drivers Vista found? This isn’t a knock that it didn’t find any, rather it found everything excepot the R360 drivers.

When I went to the epson website the latest R360 driver was dated 31/01/2007. So, why the f**k isn’t it included in Vista? Or, if not ont he disk why doesn’t the driver-finder grab it off the Epson site? This is what it did for the Epson scanner. Is it that difficult to go through all the drivers listed on the Epson website for over 18 months and add them to Vista’s driver list?

I just cannot understand how it can find 3 out of 4 Epson drivers and not the fourth. Whats the issue with that one driver? Did you just forget to add that one out of the hundreds of others for shits and giggles?

Sense it does not make. No, its not a big deal for me to sort out obviously, but my m8 would have struggles. More to the point it just belies the complete lack of any coherency in how Vista is put together.

————

As much as MS keeps telling everyone how well Vista is selling, one thinks the lady doth protest to much. Funny how they won’t reveal the actual number of registered licenses in use, or how many people use the ‘downgrade’ rights to XP. That they’ve just initiated a $300 million campaign to ‘tell the real Vista story’ is enough to prove they have major problems with it.
